“What I treasure about Method Writing is that it is a brilliant lesson in connecting and staying true to one’s voice. From that place, the writer can go anywhere. It is the core teaching that has made me passionate about acting as well.”
Laura Dern (actor and method writing student)
“Jack’s Method Writing system breaks down the very daunting process of creative writing into bite-sized chunks that are actually fun and easy.”
Hank Azaria (actor and method writing student)
• eliminates reliance on inspiration – no more writer’s block!
• focuses on tonal dynamics and the writer’s deep voice
• systematically trains writers to create cinematic scenes

Jack Grapes, who devised this curriculum over several decades of teaching, describes Method Writing as “an organic approach to the creative process, a way of finding your deep, authentic voice. You will also learn to write using ‘tonal dynamics’ to make your writing more fluid and compelling. Like method acting, which focuses on truth and organic process, Method Writing deals with the inner voice and how it can be used to create unique works of art, true to your own voice and style, true to your own vision and point of view, true to your own life experience—whether you’re writing poems, stories, novels, plays, screenplays, non-fiction, memoir, shopping lists, recipes, ransom notes, etc.”
Charles Kruger, your instructor, taught for decades as a secondary English teacher before reinventing himself as “The Storming Bohemian” and declaring his profession to be “arts practitioner.” That was in early 2009. The following summer, he began writing a blog, “Storming Bohemia,” which documented his efforts to attend and write about 90 San Francisco area literay events in as many days. “Storming Bohemia” was noted nationally in The New York Times and on the blog (“Harriet The Blog”) for the Poetry Foundation. Subsequently, Charles became a founding Board member of two significant Bay Area reading series: “Quiet Lightning” and “Bay Area Generations.” His column, “The Storming Bohemian Punks The Muse,” has been featured on the website “LitSeen” which focuses on the SF literary community, as well as on “The Rumpus.” He has published poems and other writing in The Rumpus, ONTHEBUS, Winedrunk Sidewalk, Sparkle + Blink, Writing Without Walls, Red Fez and other venues both notable and and obscure. For “TheatreStorm,” a site for reviews of live theatre, Charles has published nearly a thousand reviews of plays for which he has been identified as “the pre-eminent critic of smaller theatres in the Bay area” by the SF Weekly.

Method Writing is a series of writing
provide a toolbox of
techniques from which a
writer can draw to construct a
coherent whole, whether it be a
poem, an essay, a short
story, a play, or even a recipe.
The process is always the same, and does not require inspiration, or even a clear vision, to get rolling.
WHAT DO THEY SAY ABOUT CHARLES?
“Charles has studied with me going back over 20 years, he’s an accomplished writer, artist, theater-reviewer, and general man-about-town who knows good writing and has a gift for teaching, which is why I’ve authorized him to teach the basic tenets of Method Writing.”
Poet & Creator of “Jack Grapes Method Writing”
“Charles is a true artist who has continued to push forward his whole life. He has a lot to offer anyone looking to learn how to express themselves or to increase their capacity to do so.”
Founder, “Quiet Lightning”
Editor for “LitSeen” and “Sparkle + Blink”
“I first met Charles Kruger in 2009, when, as the “storming bohemian,” he burst onto the SF literary scene, excelling as poet, painter, and teacher — an artist to the bone, if ever there was one. Charles is an exemplary citizen of the arts. He has the talent to help authors express their vision, tell their story, to not die with their music still inside them. His emergence as a writing coach strikes me as the natural and necessary next stage in his career.”
Andrew (“Haiku Andy”) Dugas, Novelist
“Sleepwalking In Paradise”
“’Coach’ Kruger makes champion writers out of all his students. To my delight, I now have a well-worn groove of writing every day.”
Peter “Dr. Pete” Patterson
Medical Writer & Method Writing Student
“Charles Kruger’s Method Writing Class is a wonderful opportunity for a writer to find a way to write significantly more and better words. He helped me in my adventure of finding my own voice. The proven techniques that Charles was teaching showed me a way to write soul-gripping stories everyday, stories I didn’t know existed inside me, stories that surprised me as an artist.”
Method Writing Student
I took one of Jack’s classes a few years ago and was excited about the new possibilities it presented to me. I have never found anyone else who even comes close to that experience…until Charles Kruger! His encouragement and determined guidance are priceless.
